Anti-Doping - What you Need to Know
All Club Secretaries are requested to inform all archers from their clubs who may be competing, especially juniors and their parents/guardians.
For the purposes of anti-doping the SAA follows the rules of Archery GB who have adopted the UK Sport Anti-Doping Rules. You can download the rules from and find useful information on the UK Anti-Doping website.
GNAS Drug Control Procedures
DRUG CONTROL PROCEDURES - Reproduced from SHOOTING ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURE 2-1 April 2010
1. Introduction
(a) UK Sport has produced the UK Anti-Doping Rules to comply with the World Anti-Doping
Code. The GNAS has resolved that the UK Anti-Doping Rules shall be the Anti-Doping
Rules of the Society.
(b) The purpose of this procedure is to give a simply interpretation of the Rules as they
affect archers.
(c) The GNAS focal point for all drug control matters is the GNAS Drug Control Officer
within the Performance Unit (PU) who should be contacted if advice is needed.
2. Definition
(a) A Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) is a recognition that a person may have to use a
prohibited substance or method for a documented medical condition.
3. Arrangements
(a) Any archer who is likely to be placed in the top 5 in their category at a National
Tournament and who is taking prescribed medication that is on the Prohibited List
should obtain a TUE.
(b) There will be no need for the majority of archers to seek a TUE. However, any archer
who is:
(i) Selected for drug testing
And
(ii) Taking prescribed medication that is on the Prohibited List
And
(iii) Not in possession of a relevant TUE
Must, on the first working day after the test, contact the GNAS Drug Control Officer at
the PU by telephone for advice. The follow-up action required will vary according to
circumstances. The archer may be advised to apply for a retrospective TUE
immediately, in which case the application form is to be returned to the PU for
registration, forwarding and processing as a priority.
(c) The GNAS PU will advise those under its supervision (eg international teams and
support staff) of the actions required to comply with the Anti-Doping Rules.
(d) An archer or archer support person found guilty of a doping offence shall have the right
of appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Archers wishing a TUE or with a related query should contact the Performance Co-ordinator at the ArcheryGB Performance Unit . If you want to find out if your medication is on the banned list click onto the Global DRO box at the bottom of the page on the UK Anti-Doping website will allow you to enter medication details and bring up the results.
Juniors
World Record or UK Record Status competitions entry forms will require parental consent for drug testing. These entry forms must be signed by the parent or legal guardian of the Junior (U18), giving approval for drug testing to be carried out. If a Junior is selected and they refuse the test or signed parental consent is not given this will be treated as having ‘failed’ the drug test. This means that the archer could be banned for a minimum of two years.
It is therefore vital that the parent/legal guardian give written approval for a test to be carried out - It is not acceptable for a club official to sign the form on behalf of a parent/guardian.
