Robert introduced soft archery at Clydeview Academy to students from five ASN schools in the Inverclyde area as part of the Active Schools Inverclyde Disability Multisport Festival.
This was the first time many of the pupils had experienced soft archery, and the session was a resounding success. As a result, both teachers and parents are eager to undergo training so they can incorporate the activity into their schools and run after-school clubs.
Following this, Robert organised Soft Archery activity session with South Lanarkshire Disability Sport (SLDS). SLDS is a voluntary organisation with a responsibility to promote interest and participation in sport for people with disabilities within South Lanarkshire. SLDS is a member branch of Scottish Disability Sport (SDS).
The session was delivered by East Kilbride Archery Club's coaching team of Duncan McNeil and David Gillespie who took the group through range setup, safety rules and basic shooting technique for wheelchair users.
Theresa Campbell, who arranged the session and is SLDS Chair mentioned the buzz around the session:
''It was a brilliant session. The group were so motivated and beaming for the rest of the evening. The parents were thrilled to see their young people so engaged and I know there has been a lot of chat after it. The video I posted of the session had a lot more views than normal and I suspect these included multiple views from those who took part, they love showing what they've been doing to family and friends. Thank you to all of you for making Friday happen and for being part of this for the group.''
Thanks Theresa for arranging this and to Duncan & David for delivering a great session.
We are looking forward to working with SLDS going forward with discussions around ensuring there are sustainable opportunities to take part in archery through training, equipment and establishing pathways into EKAC.
Also this month, Robert has successfully trained  young people in soft archery through the Ayr Academy Session. These dedicated individuals are part of a sports development program designed to equip them with valuable leadership and coaching skills. As part of their course, the aspiring young leaders are taking on a key task: introducing various sports, including soft archery, into local primary schools.
They are also responsible for coaching and managing an after-school club, where they will have the opportunity to put their newly acquired skills into practice, inspire younger students, and help foster a love for sports in their communities. This hands-on experience is invaluable, not only for their personal development but also for creating a lasting impact on the next generation of athletes. Robert’s mentorship and the program’s focus on practical learning are empowering these young leaders to make a meaningful difference in their schools and beyond.
