Building Archery Communities - Robert's Report (July 2024)

5 Aug 2024

Assynt Leisure in Lochinver

This month, Robert travelled to northern Scotland to deliver a soft archery training course in Lochinver, where he trained nine participants. The course included primary school teachers, NHS staff, and youth workers, who will now incorporate soft archery into existing programs.

A spokesperson for Assynt Leisure said, "The manual looks great. One of the participants is over the moon with their certificate; they have laminated it and stuck it on the office wall."

We will continue to work with Assynt Leisure to expand archery in their area, aiming to qualify the coaches to Level 1 and develop their own archery range.

Decathlon Family Day

We have developed a great relationship with Decathlon, which hosted a massive multi-sport event on the weekend of July 6th and 7th at the Braehead store. The event allowed families from all over Scotland to try different sports free of charge. Robert attended on Sunday and delivered soft archery to the public, where it was very popular, attracting over 1,000 participants throughout the day. At Scottish Archery we are looking to further strengthen our partnership with Decathlon for the coming year.

Central and West Integration Network

Euan and Robert attended an event by the Central and West Integration Network (CWIN), a Scottish charity that supports asylum seekers, refugees, migrant workers, and black and minority ethnic people. The charity promotes integration across Glasgow's City Centre and West End, and throughout the city and beyond.

We ran a soft archery taster session as part of the CWIN Summer holiday activity programme and ArcheryGB’s Aim for Paris initiative.   This took place at St Aloysius College in the city centre of Glasgow.  This is located in urban Glasgow, in the Garnethill area next to the internationally recognised Glasgow School of Art.  The programme aims to provide various opportunities and activities to enhance physical & mental health and wellbeing as well as supporting food security, participation and integration. We had a around 25 participants and they enjoyed archery as it was their first time taking part in it and was great to see so many families getting involved.

Iffat Bhatti, CWIN’s Holiday Programme Coordinator, commented on the session:

‘‘It was great to see everyone really enjoy first time doing archery, fantastic way to introduce the sport. It was valuable to bring activity to us so we can experience it as we probably wouldn’t had a chance otherwise.  We are fortunate we could use the multi-use games area (MUGA) to deliver the archery.  The kids had a brilliant time and was great to see parents get involved too. Nice way to get the family together’’

We looking forward to working with CWIN in the future.
