This year’s Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week is the perfect opportunity to celebrate being active by inspiring and supporting women and girls across Scotland to get involved in sport or physical activity.
Running from 2 – 8 November, this annual campaign is cnow in its tenth year. This landmark year provides an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the growth of the campaign over the last ten years, and the progress to improve opportunities for women and girls to be active across Scotland. The theme is Celebrating a Decade of the Week.
With this in mind, we thought it would be a great opportunity to showcase the fantastic participants who are part of the 2026/27 Women & Girls Coaching Academy (WGCA). The group of 10 participants are already making lots of progress after completing Module 1 of the Archery GB Level 1 Session Coach Award, supported by a team of mentors.
The Women & Girls Coaching Academy (WGCA) aim is to provide a dedicated space and support programme for females interested in coaching, with the aim of encouraging more women and girls to take up coaching roles. Further to this, only 34% of Archery GB (AGB) licenced coaches in Scotland are women & girls, which compared to our overall membership data shows 38% of members are Women & Girls. This suggests that women are underrepresented within coaching roles.Â
Some of the participants shared why they got involved in WGCA and what they are enjoying most about the programme so far:
‘‘I was brought into the sport, and I fell in love with it. I love competing, and I love the community. There is also fewer women. I knew if I could model as an archer and a coach, it could result in inspiring more women and girls to join the sport too!’’
‘‘Learning how women can excel at helping each other in sport and be represented.’’
‘‘I’ve enjoyed meeting other women passionate about archery, and learning from skilful mentors and coach developers.’'
‘‘This is such an amazing chance that has allowed me to become a coach - the financial support means I can continue bringing more people to this wonderful sport. ’’
A big thank you to both the participants and mentors for their passion and commitment to the programme so far and for sharing their experiences of the programme.
