Recurve Equipment Day in Montrose

3 Mar 2025

Recently archers and coaches in Scotland completed Archery GB’s Recurve Equipment Selection, Set Up and Tuning workshop.  There were a total of 11 attendees with a mix of coaches completing their AGB Development Coach Level 2 course, coaches topping up knowledge as well as some archers with a keen interest in this area.

This specific workshop covers the selection of a first competition standard recurve bow, how to set it up, how to tune that bow to the archer, and includes some practical opportunity to try some tuning.

Bill Mackay, one of the Coach Developers from the session shared his thoughts:

‘‘Coach Developer's Iain Wilson and myself took on the session held at The Shed in Montrose. With eleven coaches and archers attending. Iain being the lead this day spent a very interesting couple of hours going through the background knowledge required to understand the how, why and when we need to know the bow that is best setup to the archer.

The coaches then worked in small groups measuring and adjusting then testing various setups of bows. Working on questions like has this made the bow quieter, feeling smoother to draw, easier to hold on the target. Are your arrows higher etc. We then discussed stabilising with the same how, why and when.

A lot of interesting discussions and work done by everyone involved and seeing the confidence increase in our coaches made the day a great success. Reflection of the day was also encouraging with more thoughts on regular events are definitely required to keep developing and keeping up with all the new materials being used. Our thanks to Links Archer in Montrose for the use of their range and equipment and the attending coaches who put in so much energy.’’
