Green Lane Archers in Ashington played host to the penultimate stage of the Junior Archery Series (JAS), hosting stage 3. A slightly closer trip for some archers in Scotland with Ashington being where the event was based.
Overall a pretty successful weekend for Scotland’s archers.
Olivia Kendal was only compound left standing after a field that dwindled due to no-shows and 2 withdrawals, so she took compound Gold to follow-up on last week’s JNOC wins.
It was U21 Recurve Gold for Kristin Ward who was up against Jenna Graham of Jolly Archers of H&W who were only competitors in this category.
Zac Ibrahim finished 4th and had a very tough semi-final against eventual winner Lewis Bodkin in the Recurve U18, after winning his opening two ties in a convincing style.
9th in U18 Recurve for Sarah MacLeod in a highly competitive field and with a larger entry in comparison to other events. She had a good match with Daisy Hyde who went on to finish 5th.
It was Barebow Gold for Kaitlyn Mason after qualifying in second and managed edge her opponent in the Gold medal match with a 6-5 after a 1 arrow shoot-off.
Well done to all the archers and nonetheless, good preparation for athletes heading into the last 2 legs then the final (Youth Fest and Wallingford - final in Meriden).
Ainsley Ward, Scotland National Team Manager shared his reflections from the event:
“While the rest of the UK baked in a heatwave, including back home in Scotland, this JAS leg found the only cool field in the country as an overcast Ashington gave us near-perfect archery conditions right through qualifying.
With a good group of Scottish archers making the 3-4 hour journey South again, it was sad that many of the Southern-based archers did not show the same commitment to join us.
Those that did show, including Saffron from Cornwall following an 8-hour drive, and a contingent from Wallingford, found an exceptionally welcoming and enjoyable tournament in a beautiful corner of the UK.
Green Lane Archers put on a great event and with a good mix of local and touring archers creating a competitive event (with an excellent BBQ!). Some great tour points for our Scottish archers ahead of the upcoming next leg at Youth Festival and we even managed to finish close to schedule!”
