Seniors go for gold at East Ayrshire’s Care Home Games

10 Jun 2026

The East Ayrshire Senior Care Home Games took place on Wednesday 3 June 2026, drawing a remarkable turnout with 15 out of the 18 care homes in East Ayrshire participating.  The event was organised by East Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership. This partnership is made up of partners from East Ayrshire Council and NHS Ayrshire and Arran, working together to deliver social care and community health services.

We were delighted that archery was once again included as part of the Games, with four fantastic volunteers from Kilmarnock Barebow Archers  (KBA)  leading the activity ensuring that all residents had fun and an enjoyable experience of archery.   A big thank you to the  team from KBA – Eileen, Robin, Pete and Gregor and to KBA's Tim for coordinating and arranging this.

The games, attended by the Depute Provost, were highly successful and supported by a large network of volunteers who ensured the day ran smoothly. Residents from across the local care homes competed in several light-hearted and adapted sports, showcasing excellent team spirit and active participation.

  • Activities Contested: Residents showcased their sportsmanship and enthusiasm in events including archery, basketball, and volleyball.

  • Live Entertainment: In addition to the sports, attendees were thoroughly entertained by the East Ayrshire Young Carers, who showcased local singing and dancing talents.

Tim Diesel of Kilmarnock Barebow Archers (KBA) shared the reason why the club got involved in supporting the event:

“KBA is always keen to support community events where we can, whether that is working with beginners, local groups, care homes, mental health organisations, youth groups or Scottish Archery initiatives. Archery has a way of bringing people together, and events like the Care Home Games remind us why we do it. It is not just about shooting arrows, it is about confidence, inclusion, laughter, and giving people a chance to try something they may never have thought was for them.”

“At Kilmarnock Barebow Archers, we believe archery is a sport for everyone, regardless of age, ability or background. Getting involved in events like the Care Home Games gives us the chance to share that belief in a practical way, support our local community, and show people that archery can be fun, accessible and rewarding. For our volunteers, it is also a lovely opportunity to give something back and pass on the enjoyment of the sport.”

Robert Clark, Communities & Workforce Development Officer commented on the success of  the day:

“It was wonderful to see so many residents taking part and enjoying themselves. The enthusiasm, laughter, and sense of achievement throughout the day were fantastic, and it was a privilege for Kilmarnock Barebow Archers to help introduce archery to so many people.”

Scottish Archery would like to take this opportunity to thank East Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership for having archery included.  It was so pleasing to see the care home residents have a great day at the event trying various different sports and activities and connecting with others.
