Following the recent British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Northern Area Qualifier in Aberdeen back in February, 29 archers from across 7 universities and colleges in Scotland competed on Saturday in the BUCS Archery Indoor Championships. The event again took place at the University of Warwick’s Sports and Wellness Hub. Archers were represented from across St Andrews, Edinburgh, Abertay, Aberdeen, Heriot-Watt, Strathclyde and Dundee.
Well done to all the archers who competed in a strong and competitive field of student archers, with total of 254 archers across the UK competing. There were some excellent individual performances. This included Strathclyde University Archery Club’s Rose Mouat in the Women’s Barebow category. Rose managed to put in a solid performance in qualifying with score of 465, placing third. From here Rose managed to maintain this form into the knockout stages, taking Silver in a close encounter narrowly losing 6-4. Congratulations Rose!
Meanwhile, in the Women’s Longbow, Dundee University Archery Club’s Cizzie McGuiness took the Bronze medal. Advancing from qualifying, Cizzie won the opening qualifying match 6-2 however, eventual winner Helen Woodcock of MMU Archery Club manage to clinch the victory. Although, Cizzie bounced back winning 6-2 to take the Bronze medal. Great job Cizzie!
Erin-Ann Dobbin, who was there in her capacity as a BUCS Archery Events Management Group member, shared her experience of the event:
‘‘It was fantastic to see so many Scottish student archers qualify for the BUCS Finals and support one another throughout the day. With some impressive scores and two BUCS medals, it was a highly successful event.
I’m honoured to have been able to support the event and to continue playing a part in the student archery community.’’
Kelsey Hunt, competitor for University of St Andrew’s Archery Club and SSS Archery Development Group volunteer added:
‘‘BUCS finals was an event that reminded us all how much community is the backbone of our sport in Scottish Archery. We all did a fantastic job up against the strong archers, many shooting above their rank in the qualifier events. The best bit is how each Scottish archer stayed back no matter how early they finished, to support and rally those of us still going. I love this sport, and I love the community of it even more’’
We would like to take this opportunity to wish all the student archers the best of luck in the Scottish Student Sport (SSS) Indoor Head to Head on Saturday at Strathclyde Sport.
