Kilmarnock Barebow archers supported by the West of Scotland Archery Association, were invited to present an introduction to archery to 200 East Ayrshire Leisure Trust staff at their staff wellbeing day at Dean Castle in Kilmarnock. The day included a variety of archery activities including fun crossbow target with suction tipped darts aiming at inflatable targets, soft archery and full archery using snake bows.
The day was part of Archery GB’s Aim for Paris which is part of the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympics legacy programme which was great timing to inspire the staff taking part. Also gave the opportunity for staff completing archery to receive stickers and if hitting a 10 receiving a gold pin badge as a prize for accurate shooting.
The activity took place at the impressive Dean Castle was the home and stronghold of the Boyd Family for over 400 years. Originally known as Kilmarnock Castle, the name change reflects the surroundings that the Castle sits in, as dean is a traditional Scottish word for a wooded valley. Shay Boyd, U21 Scotland Pathway Academy athlete was one of the volunteers commented:
“It has been a nice afternoon getting to introduce archery to individuals in the East Ayrshire area which has gotten a lot of positive attention.”
Eileen Blackwood, volunteer from Kilmarnock Barebow who helped last month at the Path to Paris in Cumnock reflected on the day:
‘‘Bring the community together and great opportunity for staff to try new activities. Good to see the enjoyment and competitive spirit between the staff and the fun then had from trying archery. Personally I enjoyed the opportunity to socialise too which was nice and meet new people’’
Scottish Archery’s Club and Coaching Development Officer, Euan Murray commented on the day:
‘‘All round it was great day and thanks to West of Scotland Archery Association and Kilmarnock Barebow Archers for inviting me along. The volunteer team of Richard, Eileen, Linda, Steven, Shay and Daniel did a great job at providing a fun and engaging experience for all the staff. Its great to see the club and local area supporting opportunities like this in their community which enhance the health and wellbeing of local people. I also enjoyed having the chance to meet and interact the staff and find out about they work they do’’
