At the weekend, ten Level 2 coaches in training completed their first set of practical in-person days. The sessions took place at Leith Academy, which included both the Drills & Skills and Coaching Technique modules as part of the Archery GB Level 2 Development Coach Award course.
The Level 2 course equips coaches with the skills and knowledge on how to develop new archers through designing and delivering learning. It aims to help people continue their archery journey beyond their initial beginner's experience. Lack of support following a beginner's course is one of the biggest reasons people leave a new sport.
The first session, Drills & Skills, took a deep dive into the Archery GB Technical Framework with a detailed focus on each of the shot routine stages. There was also an opportunity for learners to look at how to record and track progress of the archers they are working with, across static measures, shot sequence and shot execution.Â
The following day, the group completed the Coaching Technique module. This session focused on understanding how archers learn, the ability to identify technical errors and from here, develop a plan to correct.
AGB Coach Developer Bill Mackay reflected on the weekend:
‘‘All in all, it was a good weekend with all the coaches working very hard to perfect their new skills. Having coaches who are volunteers giving their time and energy for their sport is encouraging, and you could see this in the group’s efforts, enthusiasm and creativity – coming up with positive solutions to various problems and challenges.’’
AGB Coach Developer Iain Wilson added:
‘‘It was an enjoyable and intense weekend. It was rewarding to watch the candidates ask themselves questions and then see the look of enlightenment on their faces.’’
