Reflections: Hot Topic Session – Exploring your Why

14 Aug 2024

In partnership with Scottish Fencing, we hosted another Hot Topic Session yesterday evening, which focused on the topic of ‘Exploring your Why’.

You may have heard the phrase ‘Changing Lives’ in the context of sport, simply this is an approach to intentionally use sport to help people and communities.   You can find out more about this here.

It all starts with Why…

  • Why are you involved in your sport?

  • Why do put time in to organising and running your club sessions?

  • Why do you do what you do?

  • What is your clubs why? Is it the same as your why?

The session was delivered by Scottish Fencing’s Club and Community Development Manager Daniel Baker and our Club and Coaching Development Officer Euan Murray.  There were lots of interesting discussions from the session, which included:

  • Why did you attend this session?

    • Always looking to improve by asking yourself questions and why you do what you do through self-reflection

    • Delve deeper into a topic and gain a greater understanding

    • Chance to meet up with other clubs being from a rural area to share ideas and almost reassure yourself that you are doing the right thing

    • Gaps in cross-sport learning so this seemed like an opportunity for this

    • Club is going through lots of change at the moment, so this session is good timing

    • Exploring if your personal why fits in the with club, region and NGB

  • Why do you do what you do?

    • Passion of making a difference

    • Sport involved in gives you a sense of belonging, feel part of a team and also allows everyone to compete at their own level

    • Provide access/opportunities for people to participate in sport and keep fit & healthy

    • Enjoyment of introducing new people into the sport and pleasing to see them progress

    • Fun and inclusivity

    • The satisfaction of coaching is enjoyable and inspiring

    • Want to support young people and more recently school leavers to continue in the sport

    • Provide a pathway and positive destination for people

  • What impact have you seen sport have on people and communities?

    • Positive impact sport had on people who have experience trauma which can improve both physical & mental health and wellbeing

    • The way sport has enhanced the confidence of children and adults with disabilities, as well as bringing families and communities together

    • Impact coaching sport has had on the coaches personally.  Witnessed an increased level of enthusiasm and openness to learn & improve from the coaches with the introduction of new projects within the club and the enjoyment the coaches have got out of helping others

We would like to thank the clubs who came along and engaged in the session, and hope they found it useful going forward.

Following this we have our first Club Development Webinar on Development Planning on 26th September – we hope to see you there! For more information or to book a space, click here
