Round up: Orkney 2025 International Island Games

30 Jul 2025

By Fiona Hirst

Planning for the event started what seems like many moons ago! A big shout out to Helen Corsie, Ian Brough and Aaron Brough who were not only involved with the formalities of organising but also competed.

The weather all week was superb. Lots of sunshine and only one day with slight showers. Which did confuse many athletes who were prepared for the usual on slought of wet and windy weather by bringing their winter weather clothes!

On the first day of official practice the atmosphere was calm as Athletes caught up with friends and fellow competitors from the other islands. The officials were getting themselves prepared for the start of the competition by finalising details and making sure that all were ready for the weeks event. Susan (COJ) had a meeting with the Judges which ensured the smooth running of the event. Menorca archer found himself dehydrated and had  cramp in one of his hands. He was taken away in ambulance for check up and returned after treatment. There were no ill effects for the rest of his competition but it was a reminder of the importance of staying hydrated.

Teams were called forward by judges one island at a time for equipment inspection.

Live streaming teams for the Games spent the day setting up and positioning their cameras to catch the best views of the Archery field.

Monday 1440

Today was a little windy but consistent.  The joy of the Games is that experienced archers are teaming up with the less experienced  and we found  lots of arrows finding the wood which kept volunteers busy all day, but did not impact on the running of the event.

Tuesday  a.m. 720 ranking round

The morning saw two very short sharp showers but did not dampen spirits. The comradery outshone the rain as individual archers competed for top rankings which would form the Mixed team for the afternoon event.

Mixed pairs P.M.

Teams for this are made up of top male and top female from each division and Island. Medals were presented on the Thursday to all team members regardless of whether they were included in the match  or not

Wednesday Individual H2H knockouts

This was a chance for the individual archers, previously ranked from the results of the 720 round shot the day before, to go Head to head for the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. Special mention goes out to Compound archer, Nikkel Petterson from the Faroe Islands, for his Island Games record shot in the quarter finals 15 arrow pass 146/150

Throughout the day we found ourselves being interviewed and quizzed by the BBC and ITV and crews from all over the world.  Radio Orkney were also there speaking to Officials and competitors. It did become apparent how little the media knew regarding archery - Malcolm sorted that out!

Thursday a.m. Teams

The team selection for this was done differently from the usual WA rules. WA rules states that teams are made up of three men or three women but due to Island games by laws the teams could be made up of two men and one female or two female and one man.

Medal Ceremony p.m.

The medal ceremony was held just outside the athletics stadium. There were 14 awards to go out. Volunteers had the honour of raising flags for each division. What came across quite clearly as we watched this take place was the respect for each Island Nation from fellow competitors and from other sports. Athletes were certainly extremely proud to take their places on the podium, and so they should have been!

WHAT A WEEK! WHAT AN EXPERIENCE! WHAT A GAMES! WHAT AN HONOUR!

THANK YOU ORKNEY!
