Scots battle windy conditions in Oxford at AGB National Tour Stage 3!

24 Jun 2025

At the weekend, a selection of Scottish archers once again travelled down to south to compete in the third stage of the Archery GB National Tour this time hosted at Oxford Archers.

Ayr Archery Club’s Kristin Ward was part of a strong lineup of archers in the Recurve Women’s event.  Giving it her all, Kristin came up short against opponent Ecaterina Pogorenii of Oxford University Company of Archers who took win in the opening round of heads to heads.  Great experience all round and lots of positives to take back to a training environment.

In the Men’s Recurve, Joshua Phillips of Links Archers finished 19th in qualification with an impressive score of 614.  He then progressed through the head to heads, winning to matches both 6-0 however Round of 32 opponent Darragh Joyce of London Archers edging the win 6-2 despite some close scores.  Great effort Joshua.

Cameron Radigan off the back of winning Gold and Silver medals at the Euro Para Cup at end of last month, was also competing.  A solid qualification of score of 634 placed him 9th.  After wins in early stages of head to heads, Radigan in Round of 16 was pipped by opponent Christopher Baigent who won shoot-off 7-6 – such a close encounter but great performance.

Edinburgh University Archery Club’s (EUAC) Sarah Prieels was looking to replicate a similar performance to stage 2 taking silver.  Prieels had a good start with score of 657 in qualifying.  From here, it was tight ends in the head to head matches, setting up a repeat of stage 2 against world number 1 Ella Gibson.  Again on this occasion, Gibson narrowly took the win 145-138 with Prieels finishing 7th overall and 8th in AGB National Tour standings – well done Sarah!

Keeping it Compound, in the Men’s event both Finlay Clark and James Ross were competing.  Finlay got off to a strong start with 670 score in qualifying and James with score of 620.  Into the head to heads, James was beaten by the narrowest of margins 135-127 by opponent Dillon Crow of Cleadon Archers.  Finlay managed to progress to quarter finals stage but opponent Luke Davis had the edge on this occasion with a win of 144-139.  Finlay now moves into 7th on the AGB National Tour standings.  Great performances in tricky conditions by both archers!

Dundee Archery Club’s Steven Brison was flying solo in the Barebow event as only Scot.  With the weather conditions, barebow would certainly be impacted most by the weather making it a tough challenge.  Despite close scores throughout, opponent Athanasiou Martin of Bowmen of Harrow won 6-2 to progress to next round.  Great effort Steven.

Scottish National Team Manager, Ainsley Ward share his thoughts on weekend:

‘‘Saturday was warm until the sun broke through, and then it was very hot - until the head-to-heads when it started steadily raining - real mixed weather bag.  There was a steady headwind all day making shooting tricky but was a great day overall. With this being the furthest away leg for National Tour the Scottish contingent was small but some good results overall.’’
