Supporting Young People to build skills and confidence through Archery

1 Oct 2026

GROW (Glasgow Regional Opportunities for Work) is a programme designed to introduce S3 and S4 pupils from lower socio-economic backgrounds to the world of work. The programme aims to build pupils’ confidence outside the classroom, broaden their horizons about the world of work and help them feel more connected to their communities.

Over eight weeks, pupils have the opportunity to explore up to eight different sectors, taking part in employer visits with interactive, hands-on activities that introduce them to the wide range of careers and roles available, at different organisations.

For their first visit as part of the GROW programme, pupils from Trinity High School in Rutherglen took part in a session with us. They learned more about careers and opportunities within the Health & Wellbeing sector before getting involved themselves with some soft archery training. They ended the day with a 'Design your own mascot' activity, where pupils considered how they can market the sport to a wider audience, coming up with ideas for mascot appearances at events, and creating ideas for potential merchandise.

Some comments from Connor Wright (COVEY Befriending), the youth worker supervising the group;

‘‘The group from Trinity High School are a really bubbly and engaging group, who when given a task they give it their full attention, and work together no matter the make-up of smaller groups. They thoroughly enjoyed their visit with Scottish Archery. Robert was clear with them about the instructions for the session and how to be safe throughout, which was especially great as many of the pupils hadn't taken part in soft archery before. Robert made the group feel comfortable for them to ask questions, and share ideas for new archery games, and for marketing ideas related to the 'Design your own mascot' activity. A great first visit for the pupils.’’

The GROW Programme is part of Developing the Young Workforce which is one national network with 20 local Regional Groups funded by Scottish Government and part of the national skills, education and careers system.

Each group works closely with employers, schools and colleges to build meaningful partnerships that reflect the unique industries, skills needs and opportunities of their local area. This local approach ensures our work is relevant, responsive and makes the greatest impact.

A big thank you to DYW Glasgow, which is supported by Glasgow Chamber of Commerce for having us involved in the programme - we had a blast!
