A huge thank you to all the young archers who completed our survey. The information is really helpful and will assist us in engaging in more meaningful ways with our young archers. The overview of the results can be found below.
The majority of young people who completed the survey said the best thing about archery was the community, seeing improvements, meeting new people and making friends
Common themes for barriers were cost, competition nerves and lack of competition for younger ages.
80% of young people said they feel their voice is heard within their archery environment.
90% of young people said they would know who to speak at their club or with Scottish Archery if they have a concern or something they were not happy with.
72% of young people have access to a coach
50% said there are enough opportunities to progress in their area, with 50% saying no or they don’t know.
Almost 90% of young people said they feel their views could be better represented by either junior workshops, a Youth Panel or a Junior Board Representative
87% of young people said they would potentially like to be involved in any youth initiatives
Recommendations
From the survey findings it is recommended initially to set up a youth panel, offering places on the youth panel for any young person aged between 15 – 23 who would like to be involved. The youth panel will then consider how to engage with young archers aged14 and below to ensure their voices are also heard.
Once the youth panel is in place and the structure of how the group will operate is set up, there could be the potential to have one person from the youth panel representing the panel at Scottish Archery board meetings. The youth panel could provide a mechanism for young archers to develop programmes, highlight areas of priority, identify ways to encourage more young people to get involved in archery, and to ensure young people’s voices are heard within the archery environment in Scotland.
We would like the youth panel to decide how often to meet and how the group functions, and so step one is to gather together a group of young archers keen to be involved. We are now taking names of people who would like to be part of the development of the youth panel, and who would like to sit on the youth panel. If you are aged between 15 and 23 and would like to apply be part of our youth panel, please complete the form below.
